$500 was given to the Michigan Nurses Foundation (MNF) this spring from UMPNC. MNF supports scholarships for nursing students, research grants, and financial aid for the treatment of recovering nurses.

Michigan Nurses March on March 12, 2008
UPDATE: Approximately 300 RN's and student nurses converged in Lansing last month in the MNA's Michigan Nurses March. Over 20 UMPNC members participated! A special thanks to Renee Curtis and Mila Sarsozo who joined the MNA Board of Directors in meeting with Governor Granholm to advise the Governor of the merits regarding the MNA's Safe Patient Care legislation.

The Michigan Nurses Association, our 11,000 member state affiliate, will organize hundreds of RN's across our state to converge in Lansing on March 12, 2008, to promote our profession's legislative agenda. The $20 registration fee will be reimbursed to any UMPNC member who has participated in Michigan Nurses March. This fee includes breakfast, lunch, and conference materials. Copies of receipt of payment and CEU's earned for the event will be needed for reimbursement. Space is limited and the deadline for registration is February 27, 2008.

UMPNC Nurses Mourn Death of CCMU Nurse Cheryl Johnson,
MNA and UAN President

Cheryl Johnson, 57, UMPNC member and long time CCMU nurse, died at University Hospital Sunday October 28, 2007. Cheryl had recently been re-elected to her 3rd term as MNA President. She was also president of the United American Nurses (UAN) and a member of the AFL-CIO Executive Council. Cheryl was the first president of the UAN. Cheryl served a term as chair of UMPNC in the 1990s. A beautiful service was held at the Ford Auditorium on November 12, 2007 to pay tribute to Cheryl's life and legacy as a union leader, ICU nurse, loving mother, and friend. UMPNC Leaders and members, CCMU staff, Marge Calarco, MNA Leaders, and labor leaders from around the country, including AFL-CIO President John Sweeney, were among the speakers. Many spoke of Cheryl's love for nursing and her strong advocacy. Her sense of humor was mentioned by many of the speakers. BYLAWS PROPOSAL PASSES

Bylaws changes proposed by the Economic and General Welfare Cabinet to the 2006 MNA House of Delegates have passed. More details on the new changes will be available in the November/December Michigan Nurse and in future issues of NurseLine. Eleven members of the UMPNC Leadership Team served as delegates to the 2006 MNA HOD.

UMPNC Members Honored by MNA

Cheryl Johnson, RN, MNA and UAN President, former UMPNC Chair, was
inducted into the Michigan Nurses Hall of Fame on Wednesday, October 4.
Cheryl works on 6D, CCMU. Congratulations Cheryl!

Denise O'Brien, MSN, APRN, FAAN, was presented with the MNA Excellence
in Nursing Practice award. Denise is a Clinical Nurse Specialist in the
PACU. Congratulations Denise!

Stephanie Minerath, RN, UMPNC vice chair, was one of six nurses to
receive E&GW ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS.
