                            _ Dear UMPNC Member,

Our local union in coordination with the Michigan Nurses Association and our national affiliate, the National Nurses United/NNU, are mobilizing members to enact our Main Street Campaign.

In brief, the Main Street Campaign calls for:
                            • jobs for the unemployed
                            • quality, public education
                            • protection of Medicare and Social Security
                            • a just taxation where the wealthy and corporations begin to pay their fair share
While the wealthy and corporations have money to corrupt the political process, the rest of us have ‘what’s right’ on our side, plus our 170,000 member-strong NNU and progressive allies throughout the country. The rich have the money, we have the bodies.

Some may ask, “What’s the need to mobilize for the Main Street Contract, we just got an Agreement with the employer?”

In short, what we gain in economic struggles with our employers can be taken away by regressive forces in the state and federal legislatures. For example:
                            • we could not secure retroactive pay in our Agreement has the state legislature and Governor Snyder prohibited it
                            • our cities and school boards can be overtaken by Emergency Financial Czars if the Governor imposes such action
                            • the recent state budget gave tax cuts close to $2 billion to the wealthy and corporations, while transferring that tax burden onto retirees and the poor
We have no choice but to fight back and advance our struggle politically.
Our union calls all our members to action by mobilizing for the Main Street Contact.

Please sign the endorsement form and fax to the UMPNC office at (734) 663-0212.  We look forward to you becoming an RN, leader-activist.

                            In Solidarity,
                            UMPNC Leadership

If you’ve never been in a union, chances are the concept is pretty foreign. When it comes to understanding unions, collective bargaining, and labor laws, the technical jargon can get really confusing, not to mention all of the misinformation about unions that’s regularly spread around. Read this quick tutorial to get the nuts and bolts about what a union is…and isn’t!
