Michigan Workers Under Attack: Fight Back!

Brothers and Sisters,

With the start of the New Year, many people are pursuing their new resolutions whether it is getting to the gym, starting a new diet, or giving up a bad habit. Our resolution is to take on the fight for jobs, wages, benefits, and the future of working people in Michigan.

Already there has been an announcement that Governor Snyder will start his term by attacking public sector workers benefits and salaries. Additionally, more labor threats are bubbling at the surface – we need to be prepared and informed on what these issues are.

The following bullet points are legislative battles that we are undertaking:

●   *Right-to-Work for less*: This legislation gives union representation to non-members, whether it is on the job or in the courts these free riders don't pay a dime. Bills may be introduced this month in the House and Senate, and Governor Snyder said he "would sign Right-to-Work if it came to my desk".

●   *Public Sector*: Pending will be State employees salary cuts and pension cuts. This is already on target for Governor Snyder's plan to attack the budget deficit by taking away hard earned benefits and lowering income.

●   * Public Sector healthcare*: A proposed plan to limit public sector workers to one healthcare plan for everyone has been on the table. Either this plan, or a cap on state and municipal employer's healthcare contribution will proceed through legislature.

●   *Budget Deficits*: We are facing a $1.85 billion budget deficit. This means that there will be many cuts to State services, municipal funding, and the privatization of many services will be attempted.

●   *Teachers*: At risk in many ways. Legislature will try to expand charter school numbers, vouchers are possible, salary and benefits will be attacked and legislation against tenure will be introduced.

●   *Prevailing wage*: Alterations may be attempted, as well as an outright repeal. Paycheck deception, an attempt to end Act 312 (binding arbitration for police and fire fighters), and the privatization of prisons and many other public services is a very real threat.

*What can you do to help?*

Sign our petition. It says: Michigan state laws must support good jobs with fair pay; not attack working people and their unions for political payback.

We must make a stand and say enough is enough and stop these attacks on our jobs, unions, and paychecks.

In solidarity,

Michigan AFL-CIO
